When Canadians enter contests or giveaways with tangible prizes being shipped from the USA, they may be in for some rather steep sticker shock, Why?

Even if the prize includes free shipping, the company has no say over taxes and duties that will be levelled at the border. In order to avoid sticker shock, Canadian Contesters may wish to avoid entering contests where there is a tangible product prize being shipped from the USA. However, gift card prizes that you can use for online shopping where you can purchase items that are shipped from inside Canada may be okay.I imagine this may also be a problem for people who enter contests where the prize is being shipped from Canada to the USA.
Many Canadian Contesters are unaware of where their prize is being shipped from, so it pays to check.
